Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
