Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
